We are not expert in the Astar-DHL-UPS relationship. As fr as we know: DHL Airways Inc. changed its name to AStar Cargo Inc. on about 30 June 2003, DHL sold its DHL Airways stock, DHL later bought much Astar stock, and Dasburg remained the airline's CEO from when it was DHL Airways until today (30 May 2008). DHL seemed to be a crucial customer of Astar ("DHL can't afford another service disruption ...." and "We all still wish our paycheck said DHL and not ASTAR though.") at 3:29 p.m. on 30 November 2006 according to a post by jetset (Line Holder) in Airline Pilot Central Forums.
ATW Daily News had an article, "DHL-UPS deal creates uncertain future for ABX, Astar", by Aaron Karp, on 30 May 2008. In 2007, DHL acquired a 49 percent minority equity interest and a 24.9 percent voting interest in Astar. All of Astar's air lift would be moved to UPS (which we guess means that UPS will do DHL's air lift work, not Astar).
DHL uses Astar and ABX. According to an article on former webpage www.miamiherald.com/business/story/550192.html, "DELIVERY SERVICES: DHL to cut jobs, partner with UPS", 29 May 2008, by PATRICK DANNER of miamiherald.com, the DHL-UPS deal may be the result of Astar's failure in 2007 to acquire ABX, which would have created one airline and more efficiencies for DHL.
